Two more people, a 29-year-old man and 16-year-old boy, have been arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent, after an alleged assault on a 12-year-old boy outside a rugby club. The arrests come after a 36-year-old man and 16-year-old boy were arrested earlier this week in relation to the same incident.
South Wales Police continues to appeal for witnesses to the alleged attack, which left a 12-year-old boy with a bleeding, bruised and swollen face after he was allegedly strangled and repeatedly punched outside Cwmgors rugby club, in Neath Port Talbot last Sunday, January 29. Officers say enquiries are ongoing.
A spokesperson for the force said: "South Wales Police received a report on Sunday, January 29 of an assault on a 12-year-old boy outside Cwmgors Rugby Club around 6pmthat evening. Four people have been arrested in connection to the incident. A 36-year-old man and 13-year-old boy have been arrested on suspicion of Section 18 GBH with intent.
"A 29-year old man and 16-year-old boy have been arrested on suspicion of Section 18 wounding with intent. All four have been released on police bail for further enquiries."
Neighbourhood Inspector Lindsey Sweeney added: "This apparently unprovoked attack has left a 12-year-old boy in a state of shock. Enquiries are on-going, however we believe that there may well have been people in the area at the time of the incident who may have witnessed what happened.
"I would appeal for anyone that was in the vicinity of the rugby club around 6pm on Sunday evening, or who may have witnessed the assault, to get in contact with us."
The update comes after officers initially confirmed South Wales Police had received a report of an assault outside the rugby club and later confirmed a 36-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of Section 18 grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent and that a 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of Section 18 wounding with intent in relation to the incident.
The mother of the 12-year-old alleged victim said her son spent six hours at Morriston Hospital in Swansea receiving treatment after the ordeal and had to have a head-scan -which fortunately showed no damage beyond heavy facial bruising. The boy was later referred to a Singleton Hospital eye specialist who did not identify a major injury but has scheduled another appointment for next week.
The child's mother said the biggest impact on her son has been psychological. "His life's been threatened. He's living in fear and scared to go outside," she said "The hospital has referred him for counselling and escalated it because of his age... We're asking for any witnesses to come forward."
