Two million people evacuated as Typhoon Mekhhala sparks flooding in Japan

  • Japanese authorities are evacuating over two million people and issuing warnings for floods and landslides as Typhoon Mekkhala approaches the region.
  • Typhoon Mekkhala, currently a tropical storm, is expected to make landfall in Japan over the weekend, with another typhoon, Higos, also anticipated.
  • Over 200 flights have been cancelled and dozens of train services suspended in Japan, with expressways also shut down due to concerns over heavy rainfall.
  • In Taiwan, torrential rains from the typhoon have led to the closure of offices and schools in southern regions and Hsinchu, and a section of the main railway line due to flooding .
  • The highest emergency level 5 was issued in Kyoto’s Seika town after a landslide, with strong storms and intensified rainfall expected across eastern Japan.
