Two men have been left with serious injuries following a 'double stabbing' in Salford on Sunday evening. Greater Manchester Police stepped up stop-and-search powers yesterday following the brutal incident on Cromwell Road, near a Texaco service station.
Officers were called out after an altercation at around 7pm, where two men suffered injuries that were consistent with knife wounds. It's understood that the pair were victims of a street robbery involving motorbikes, the Manchester Evening News reports.
The force confirmed that both victims' injuries are serious but not life threatening. A police investigation has been launched but no arrests have been made so far.
Officers authorised a Section 60 order for parts of Salford within a mile of the scene, giving officers extra powers to stop and search individuals. It was in place until 8am on Monday.
Inspector Stephen Corless, of GMP's Salford District, said: “We have authorised stop-and-search powers in the area in response to the incident this evening. This type of incident will not be tolerated and GMP will take robust action to ensure that our communities feel safe and that offenders are brought to justice.
"While an investigation continues at pace to understand the circumstances behind this incident, we are determined to do whatever is in our power to prevent any further incidents like this taking place in Salford.
"That is why heightened stop-and-search powers have been introduced in the Broughton area of Salford to allow officers to prevent anyone found carrying weapons to be free to walk our streets. I would urge members of the public who saw anything suspicious or witnessed the incident to come forward and report information to us immediately."
Coun John Warmisham, councillor for Pendleton and Charlestown, told the MEN: "We are trying all sorts in my ward and Salford in general to stop knife crime. GMP are working closely with the council and schools and the youth service. We just can't seem to break the cycle."
