Two men jailed over fatal attack at south London Wetherspoons pub

The tragic incident led to Charlie Prodromou’s death - (Met Police)

Two men have been imprisoned after an assault in Lewisham led to a 63-year-old man’s death.

Charlie Prodromou was assaulted by Paul Tallant, 43, at The Watch House pub in Lewisham on March 1. A second man, Danny Donovan, 40, was holding a knife during the incident.

Police were called to the scene in Lewisham at 8.39pm that evening after receiving reports of a serious assault.

Prodromou and Tallant had been involved in a dispute with pub staff. The conflict led to Tallant punching Prodromou twice in the head, causing Prodromou to fall to the ground.

When police officers and paramedics attended to the scene, they found Prodromou with life-threatening injuries. He was taken to the hospital, where he sadly later died.

Tallant was arrested at 8:46pm near Lewisham High Street, just moments after police had been made aware of the incident. He was charged with murder on March 2.

Donovan was later charged with affray and possession of a knife on Thursday, 20 March.

Tallant, of Eltham, pleaded guilty to manslaughter at Woolwich Crown Court on July 25.

Danny Donovan, of Southwark, pleaded guilty to affray and possession of a knife.

Both men appeared at Woolwich Crown Court on December 11.

Tallant was sentenced to 10 years and six months’ imprisonment, and Donovan was jailed for two years and two months.

Detective Chief Inspector Craig Magee, from the Met’s Specialist Crime unit, said: “Our thoughts remain with Charlie Prodromou’s loving family and friends, who have shown so much strength over the last few months.

He described the death of Charlie as a “senseless loss of life” and said he is “missed by many”.

“He was a real family man and leaves behind three children and five grandchildren”, he said.

DC Magee added, “We hope today’s sentencing of both defendants provides a sense of justice and relief to Charlie’s loved ones.

“This incident was a shocking event that happened in the heart of Lewisham. I’d like to reassure the local community that we continue to do everything possible to prevent further violence on our streets.”
