Two men have suffered serious injuries after they were allegedly mowed down and attacked by a stranger.

A 41-year-old man allegedly ran over two men about 6.20am on Friday at a property in Coorabell, near Byron Bay, on the NSW far north coast.

A man aged 54 was trapped underneath the car after being run over, police said.

A 38-year-old man was allegedly strangled by the driver after being hit by the same car.

Police allege the 41-year-old driver fled the scene in the car but was arrested a short time later in nearby Mullumbimby.

The two victims, who are not believed to be known to the driver, received first aid from a member of the public until paramedics arrived.

The 54-year-old sustained significant facial and upper body injuries and was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.

The victim of the alleged strangling was treated for head injuries and taken to Tweed Valley Hospital in a serious condition.

The arrested man's car was seized for forensic examination.

He was charged with two counts of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and refused bail.

The man will face court on Saturday.
