Two men have appeared in court charged with the murder of a children’s nurse, Karen Cummings, in Northern Ireland.

Glenn King, 32, of no fixed address in Lurgan, and Kevin McGuigan Jr, 42, of Annacloy Park in Hillsborough, appeared at Newry magistrates court on Wednesday.

Cummings, 40, was found unconscious with a serious head injury in Laurel Heights, in Banbridge, County Down, on Saturday.

A PSNI statement said: “Karen Cummings was found unconscious in the Laurel Heights area of Banbridge on Saturday evening, 14 December. Sadly, she was pronounced deceased a short time later.”

McGuigan was arrested on Saturday at the property where Cummings was found, and King was arrested on Sunday.

McGuigan has also been charged with possession of a double-barrelled shotgun and ammunition and handling the allegedly stolen shotgun between 21 January and 14 December this year.

The two men appeared in court on Wednesday via video link from Musgrave police station in Belfast. They spoke only to confirm their names, dates of birth and that they understood the charges against them. Solicitors for both confirmed they were not lodging applications for bail.

A judge remanded the men into custody and adjourned the case to 9 January.

A vigil for Cummings, who worked in Daisy Hill hospital, is due to take place on Thursday evening in Solitude Park, Banbridge.
