Two men arrested in connection with death of dad who tried to stop his car being stolen released

Two men who were arrested in connection with the death of a man in Dublin last month have been released.

Father-of-three Ian McDonnell, 50, was killed after being struck by his own car as he tried to intercept thieves who were trying to steal his Volkswagon Passat.

The car sales manager sustained serious injuries from being carried a distance on the bonnet of his car as the robbers tried to escape.

The incident occurred on Robinhood Road, Clondalkin, Co. Dublin, on January 23.

Mr McDonnell was found lying on the ground and was rushed to Tallaght University Hospital in serious condition. He later died from his injuries.

Gardai arrested two men, aged in their 20s, on Wednesday and they were held for questioning at garda stations in the South West Dublin area.

They were released late on Thursday and a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

A garda spokesperson said on Friday: "Gardaí investigating the fatal incident that occurred on Robinhood Road, Clondalkin, Dublin 22, on Sunday evening 23rd January, 2022, have released without charge the two men who were arrested on Wednesday 16th February 2022.

"The men, both aged in the 20s were released late last night, Thursday 17th February, 2022 and a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

"Investigations are ongoing."

Gardai at Ballyfermot had previously said “significant progress” had been made in the case after a team was established under a senior investigating officer.

Officers made the arrests after gathering evidence from witnesses, examining CCTV footage, and conducting door-to-door inquiries.

The stolen Volkswagon Passat was located by gardai on Limekiln Green, Greenhills, Dublin, and underwent a forensic examination.

A second, a silver-coloured Toyota Aqua with the registration number 152 D 32687, which was also involved in the incident, was discovered burnt out in Ballinascorney, Tallaght.

The Toyota Aqua was stolen in Crumlin on the day Ian was killed.
