Two men admit carrying out robbery at Seaham petrol station

Two men have pleaded guilty to carrying out a robbery at a County Durham petrol station.

Callum Grice, 23, and Alan Lawrence, 31, stole a "till drawer", cigarettes and vapes from the Esso petrol station on Stockton Road in Seaham on January 23.

The duo appeared at Durham Crown Court on Thursday, via link from HMP Durham, to face charges connected to the incident, which happened just after 4.15pm.

Lawrence also faced a charge of having an offensive weapon, namely a bottle containing ammonia.

He pleaded guilty to the charge on the basis that he did not accept the substance was ammonia, but in fact "hand sanitizer".

Grice also faced a charge of having an offensive weapon, namely a baton. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

John Crawford, defending Lawrence, of no fixed address, told the court that a report on his mental health would need to be prepared before sentence.

Rod Hunt, defending Grice, of Margaret Street, Seaham, said he pleaded guilty to the robbery on the basis that he was the "secondary party in the robbery".

Recorder Andrew Dallas adjourned the sentencing of the men until April.

"Your sentencing will hopefully take place on April 7", he said.

"One or two matters need to be ironed out beforehand, but all being well that's when it will take place."

The recorder added that both men would receive credit for their guilty pleas and remanded them in custody until their next appearance.

Paul Abrahams, prosecuting, said that tests are also still under way regarding a "stun gun" which was allegedly found at the scene.

Following the robbery, police descended on the petrol station and paramedics were also called to treat a member of staff for facial injuries.
