Two Manchester United players could return vs Nottingham Forest as club wait on Lisandro Martinez

Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay could return for Manchester United against Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

United travel to Forest with uncertainty over eight injured players after centre-backs Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez were injured in the 2-2 Europa League quarter-final draw with Sevilla.

Alejandro Garnacho has been sidelined for five weeks with an ankle injury, Shaw has missed the last two matches, Marcus Rashford is due to miss "a few games", McTominay was unavailable against Sevilla through injury, Donny van de Beek is out for the remainder of the season and Tom Heaton is recovering from a foot injury.

Ten Hag was unable to provide an update on Martinez 12 hours after he spoke to journalists at his post-match press conference on Thursday evening but said he had an idea of the severity of the injury amid reports in Argentina Martinez had broken his metatarsal.

"I can't say in this moment, when we have news we will give it straight to you," Ten Hag said. "Let's do the medical, a full assessment, complete diagnosis, it doesn't change in this moment. I have an idea but I don't cause speculation.

"It's not even 24 hours so I don't have a complete diagnosis, so I can't tell in this moment.

"Yeah, [we could have players back]. But we have to see. We have two sessions to go, so I don't know now but it can be Scott and Luke will return to the squad. But not sure."

Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire are set to start at Forest and United have won the last 10 games that Maguire has started. Lindelof has only started five times this calendar year and there is uncertainty over the futures of both centre-backs.

When asked how much trust he has in the duo, Ten Hag replied: "A lot. Decent centre halves. They proved in the past and this season we have four or five very good centre halves who can do the job."
