It’s barely been a fortnight since the shooting of United Healthcare CEO, Brian Thompson, and already we’ve got not one, but two documentaries in the pipeline about the internet’s favourite alleged vigilante killer Luigi Mangione.
First up, we’ve got the dynamic duo of Anonymous Content and Alex Gibney‘s Jigsaw Productions throwing their hats into the ring. Gibney, who also is set to release an Elon Musk doco, is set to explore “how killers are created” and what this whole mess says about our society, according to Variety.
Two-time Emmy nominee Stephen Robert Morse, the man behind the “Amanda Knox” Netflix doco, has also decided to join the party.
Morse, clearly not one to shy away from a spicy subject, is promising to give us a “balanced exploration” of the case. I’ll be interested to see how balanced he can be since the murder case is still very much fresh and ongoing, but I’ll be sat to watch it unfold.
Morse’s project aims to dive into the nitty-gritty of the case, including perspectives from victims, families, and apparently even Mangione himself. The documentary will also aim to tackle the thorny issue of America’s privatised health insurance system.
“This case is complex and raises important questions about vigilantism, the devastating cost of a privatised healthcare system and the inevitability of violence when peaceful change is seen as impossible,” Morse said also to Variety.
“Every story is multidimensional, and I believe in treating all participants with kindness and fairness. This approach has always been central to my projects.”
Morse will be joined by director of photography Matt Cianfrani (“United Shades of America”), investigative journalist Hannah Ghorashi and filmmaker Eli Eisenstein on the project.
As for Mangione himself, he’s currently in custody at a Pennsylvania state prison. He’s lawyered up with Karen Friedman Agnifilo and Thomas Dickey as he faces a possible sentence of 15 years to life in prison if convicted on the charge of second-degree murder. Luigi is set to appear in a Pennsylvania court for a preliminary hearing next week.
So, there you have it people. Two docos, one alleged killer, and a whole lot of questions about society, healthcare, and why we can’t seem to resist a good true crime story. While there are no premiere dates yet for either projects, stay tuned for the inevitable podcast, Ryan Murphy series, and unauthorised biography that I’m sure we’ll be seeing soon enough.
