The trouble with every posture study you have ever read about is that the participants knew. Told to sit up straight and then asked whether they feel more confident, people tend to produce the answer the experiment is fishing for. That problem, called demand characteristics, is a major reason the power-posing literature ran into trouble.
A McGill University team decided to solve it with furniture.
They told nearly 200 participants they were testing a mobile app. For one group, the tablet sat on a stand on an adjustable table, which naturally produced an upright posture. For another, the tablet lay flat on a desk lowered a notch, which produced a hunch. A third group served as a control. Nobody was told how to sit, an approach the researchers designed specifically to sidestep the criticism aimed at earlier work. In post-experiment interviews, most participants said they had not realized their posture was being manipulated.
More Inflation, Not More Bursting
The task was the Balloon Analog Risk Task, a standard measure in decision-making research. Participants inflate a virtual balloon. Each pump raises the payout. Pop it, and the round's earnings vanish.
Over the course of the task, participants in the upright condition took greater risks and tended to earn greater rewards.
The interesting part is what did not happen. They did not fail more often.
"This suggests they were not acting more impulsively but rather were engaging in more effective risk-taking," Jorge Armony, professor in McGill's Departments of Psychiatry and Psychology and senior author, said in a statement from the university.
On an accompanying questionnaire, the upright group reported significantly higher feelings of pride.
They Measured Necks
Two methodological choices separate this from the posture research that came before it.
The first is the cover story, which prevents the participant from guessing what is being tested. The second is that the researchers did not simply assume the furniture worked. They used video software to measure neck angle, establishing an objective benchmark for how people actually sat rather than how they were supposed to sit. The team notes this had not often been measured in previous studies.
That measurement did more than verify compliance. According to the study's abstract, the effect of posture on self-reported pride was partially mediated by participants' measured neck angle, while the risk-taking effect was moderated by posture and by self-reported mood during the experiment.
The authors also report that the increase in risk-taking held up against confounds including discomfort with the posture and awareness of the manipulation, which is the specific objection that sank earlier work in this area.
The study, by graduate student Soren Wainio-Theberge and Armony, was published in the British Journal of Psychology and funded by Canada's Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.
What a Modest Effect Is Actually Worth
Armony has been careful, and the caution is warranted.
The effects were modest and observed in a laboratory setting, with participants recruited from a university community, meaning mostly young, mostly healthy adults performing an artificial gambling task for small stakes. A difference in a balloon game is not evidence that posture changes how anyone handles a mortgage decision, a job negotiation, or a medical choice.
Nothing here supports the idea that sitting up straight treats depression, alters personality, or produces durable changes in mood. Pride measured immediately after a task is not the same as well-being, and one session says nothing about what happens over weeks.
It is also worth noting what the design cannot separate. The upright and hunched setups differed in more than spine angle: screen height, viewing distance, and arm position all moved together. Neck angle was measured, which anchors the posture claim, but the manipulation was an environmental factor rather than a single, isolated variable.
"The findings do not mean that changing posture can dramatically transform a person's life," Armony cautioned.
Anyone experiencing persistent low mood should speak with a clinician rather than adjusting their chair.
The Ergonomics Question Underneath
Where the study points is less about self-improvement than about environments people do not choose.
If desk height and screen position can nudge posture, and posture can nudge emotional state and decision-making even slightly, then workplace ergonomics is influencing more than just back pain. Most people do not select their monitor height, their chair, or whether their laptop sits flat on a table. Those decisions are made by employers, building designers, and whoever ordered the furniture.
The authors put it in similar terms, suggesting that aside from deliberate power posing, incidental real-world factors affecting posture, such as standing desks or ergonomic setups, may influence behavior. Armony framed it as an open question rather than a recommendation, and that is the right frame. The study establishes that an environmental constraint moved both mood and behavior in a controlled setting. Whether that scales to eight hours a day across a working life is unknown and would require entirely different research to answer.
