Two former Bristol City players book their spots at the World Cup and more could follow

Famara Diedhiou will be just one former Bristol City player who will represent his country at the World Cup in Qatar later this year.

The striker was an unused substitute in the penalty victory over Egypt last night as Senegal booked their place in the tournament at the expense of Mo Salah's side.

Diedhiou, 29, started in the first leg when Saliou Ciss' own goal gave Egypt a slender advantage heading into the second-leg before Hamdi Fathi coincidentally put the ball in his own net in the reverse fixture to send the game to penalties.

Senegal's triumph means Diedhiou, who has 10 international goals in 21 caps, is more than likely to play on the biggest stage of all for the first time in his career.

It has been a hugely successful month for the forward and his country after they lifted the Africa Cup of Nations in February for the first time - also getting the better of Egypt on penalties.

City fans won't need reminding of his time at Ashton Gate having spent four seasons in BS3 before joining Alanyaspor following the expiration of his contract last summer having scored 51 goals in 169 games for the Robins.

He won't be the only former City player to be playing at the tournament with keeper Jojo Wollacott also set to feature following Ghana's qualification.

A 1-1 draw at Nigeria ensured the Black Stars qualified through away goals with Wollacott pulling off a number of fine saves to cement his place as the country's No1.

Wollacott ended his 12-year stint with the club last summer before joining League Two Swindon on a free transfer without making a senior appearance, having first joined City as a schoolboy in 2009.

Ghana's involvement also means Antoine Semenyo will be eyeing his spot in the national side when the tournament gets underway on November 21.

City's in-form striker was rewarded for his performances with his first call-up before the international break but a knee injury picked up in the draw at West Brom meant he was reluctantly forced to miss out.

Other former City players who could still play at the World Cup include Wales' Joe Morrell as they prepare for an all-or-nothing play-off match against either Scotland or Ukraine.

Tammy Abraham will also fancy his chances of representing England under Gareth Southgate after he was recently called up to the squad for the March internationals.

Ex-striker Chris Wood, who played 19 games on loan at Ashton Gate in the 2011/12 season, can help fire New Zealand to the tournament if they beat the Solomon Islands tonight.
