Lee Johnson and Tony Pulis are both on the bookies shortlist to fill the vacant managerial role at Championship rivals Peterborough.
The club announced the departure of Darren Ferguson on Saturday after the 50-year-old offered his resignation following the 1-0 defeat to fellow relegation candidates Derby.
The loss left them languishing in the bottom three, without a win since December 11 and five points adrift of safety with 15 games left to play.
The Peterborough board will be eager to make a swift appointment in a bid to salvage their season with a tough away trip to table-toppers Fulham on Wednesday followed by a six-pointer at home to Hull on Saturday.
According to BetVictor, Johnson is joint-third favourite to take the role at 12/1 alongside current Cambridge head coach Mark Bonner. Former Hull manager Grant McCann is favourite at 4/6 with Steve Evans also in the running (6/1).
Johnson, who was sacked as manager of Sunderland following a 6-0 loss to Bolton on January 30, has also been linked with the vacant role at League Two Bradford and Bristol Live believes he is eager to waste little time stepping back into the dugout.
In a twist of fate, his father Gary had a brief stint as Posh manager just over 11 years ago after spending five years at Ashton Gate. His role at Peterborough lasted just nine months before a falling out with chairman Darragh MacAnthony led to his dismissal.
Johnson, 40, is also originally from Newmarket, just a convenient hour drive away from Peterborough which could make the position an attractive proposal.
Another former City manager Pulis is also an outsider to take the job having been priced at 16/1. The survival specialist has been without work since leaving Sheffield Wednesday in December 2020.
Pulis was in the dugout for just 10 matches at the Midlands club and won just one match before club owner Dejphon Chansiri labelled his appointment as a "mistake."
