Two dogs die after suspected Blue Green algae poisoning at Scots beauty spots

Two dogs have died within days of each other after suspected Blue Green algae poisoning at beauty spots in Aberdeenshire.

The first pet died after swimming in a lake at Haddo Country Park last week. The incident sparked an urgent warning to keep dogs on a lead in the area. Toxic algae has never been found at Haddo House before but the water will be tested and reported to SEPA.

In a statement, the country park said they were saddened by the news and sent their heartfelt condolences to the owners.

They said: "We are saddened to inform you that we have unfortunately had a report of a dog dying after visiting the lake in Haddo Country Park.

"The owner reported the dog was exposed to blue-green algae, which we have never had at Haddo. Since we cannot confirm nor deny for certain if there is indeed toxic algae present, we will be arranging to have the water tested and a report made to SEPA.

"We do have occasional algal blooms and blanket weed at Haddo, which can block the light yet are not harmful to dogs or people, however we want to be absolutely sure.

"It has always been advised to have your dog on a lead around the lake or to at least be able to keep it at heel and we are now reiterating, please do not let your dogs swim in the lakes at Haddo.

"We have many resident birds, quite often nesting on the grounds around the lake, that we would rather were not disturbed, regardless of whether we have toxic algae present."

They continued: "We adore dogs at Haddo and take pride in providing everything they and their owners require for an enjoyable day out.

"Our heartfelt condolences go out to the owners of the dog, the loss of a furry best friend is crushing."

In a second incident just days later, another young dog died of suspected Blue Green algae poisoning after playing in the River Dee around the Knappach area.

The pet was rushed into a veterinary practice in Banchory after the animal collapsed and began fitting. Sadly the beloved pet did not survive.

The Town and Country Veterinary Group said: "As many of you may know on Friday at our Banchory branch we had a suspected case of Blue Green Algae poisoning.

"The dog arrived collapsed, salivating, fitting and struggling to breath after having a playful time in the River Dee around the Knappach area. Sadly, the young dog didn’t survive.

"The relevant authorities have been informed. We have also seen another post this morning that suspected Blue Green Algae has been found at Haddo House in Ellon resulting in another fatality. Please be careful when near water and remain vigilant.

"Our heartfelt condolences go out to both families affected."

Anyone with concerns is being urged to report these to SEPA directly and dog owners in the area are being asked to keep their pets away from the water.
