Two children found dead in family car as heatwave grips Europe

  • An extreme heatwave has led to at least 18 deaths in France , including two young children found deceased in a car, with the heat being the primary suspected cause.
  • Local media reports that the children , aged 2 and 4, are believed to have climbed into their mother’s car in Carpentras and reportedly become trapped inside without their mother's knowledge.
  • Despite resuscitation attempts, both children died, with the heatwave being the leading theory for their deaths, though the cause remains under investigation.
  • France experienced record-breaking temperatures, with Bordeaux reaching 41.9C and Poitiers 41.2C, exceeding previous highs; forty-nine administrative areas in France are under a red heatwave warning, resulting in school closures and adjusted timetables.
  • The heatwave extends across Europe , with Spain's Basque country under a red alert and the UK's Met Office issuing a red warning for extreme heat.
