A young boy and girl have passed away following a house fire at the weekend, police have confirmed. Emergency services were called to the scene at around 8pm on Friday, April 8.
It happened in Coronation Crescent, Preston, Lancashire. The fire service and police were called with reports that people were trapped inside the house.
A mother and her two children were rescued and taken to hospital. The mum, in her 20s, was said to have suffered non life-threatening injuries.
Her children, a boy aged five and a girl aged three, have tragically passed away after medical intervention was withdrawn yesterday. A file will be passed onto HM Coroner in due course, reports LancsLive.
A police spokesperson said: "Our thoughts are with their loved ones at this incredibly difficult time. The children’s family continued to be supported by specially-trained officers."
A joint investigation between Lancashire Constabulary and Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service to determine the cause of the fire is continuing. A 24-year-old man arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life was initially released under investigation pending further enquiries. He has now been released with no further action to be taken.
Det Ch Insp Rach Higson, of the Force Major Investigation Team, said: “This tragic incident has resulted in two children sadly losing their lives and my thoughts, first and foremost, are with their loved ones at this time. Our enquiries into the cause of the fire are continuing.”
