Two-car crash on Hamilton town centre street

A driver and a pedestrian were taken to hospital after two cars were involved in a smash on a busy town-centre road this morning.

The vehicles crashed just after 10.30am close to a bus stop on Burnbank Street at Peacock Cross in Hamilton.

Witnesses to the aftermath told how they “heard a bang” and saw passers-by and motorists rushing to help as police, fire and two ambulance crews raced to the scene within six minutes.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were called to a report of a crash involving two cars and a pedestrian on Burnbank Street near the junction with Almada Street.

“Emergency services attended and one driver and the pedestrian were taken to hospital as a precaution.”

The Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed: “We transported two patients to Wishaw General, while a third patient was treated at the scene.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson told Lanarkshire Live: "We were called to assist emergency service partners on Burnbank Road at 10.42am on Wednesday, March 8 to reports of a road traffic collision involving two vehicles and a pedestrian.

"Operations Control mobilised two appliances to the scene. Crews left at 11.30am after ensuring the area was made safe."

The road was cordoned off between Almada Street and the Academical Vaults, with recovery trucks arriving just after noon to retrieve the two vehicles.
