Two babies and 63-year-old taken to hospital after car hits man and pram in Whitley Bay

Two young children have been taken to hospital for minor injuries after a car hit a man and pram in Whitley Bay.

Northumbria Police were called at around 10.50am on Thursday, February 17 to a report of a collision on Park Avenue, Whitley Bay. It was reported that a black Kia Rio had crashed into a man and a pram.

The 63-year-old man has been taken to hospital with serious injuries not believed to be life threatening.

Two children - a one-year -old and two-year-old - have also been taken to hospital with minor injuries. The driver remained at the scene and is helping the police.

The road was closed for a period of time however the police have confirmed that it has since reopened.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "At around 10.50am today (Thursday, February 17) police received a report of a collision on Park Avenue, Whitley Bay. Officers attended the scene where a black Kia Rio has collided with a man and a pram.

"The 63-year-old man has been taken to hospital with serious injuries not believed to be life threatening. Two children - a one year old and two year old - have been taken to hospital with minor injuries.

"The driver of the car remained at the scene and is helping with enquiries.

"The road was closed but has now reopened."

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson added: "We were called at 10:47 this morning to reports of a road traffic collision on Park Avenue in Whitley Bay between a vehicle and pedestrians.

"We dispatched a number of resources, including a specialist paramedic, an officer and emergency ambulance crews.

"We transported two children to Cramlington hospital and one adult male to the RVI in Newcastle for further treatment."
