Twitter’s subscription model has rolled out in the US and New Zealand – and it’s being roasted by users

Twitter users hoping for that sweet edit button now have somewhat of a compromise, as the social media company continues its rollout of its paid subscription model, Twitter Blue (where the option to ‘undo’ tweets shortly after posing is available).

First announced in June, when it was on offer to those in Australia and Canada, the service has now expanded to the US and New Zealand, where it is priced at $2.99 and $4.49 a month respectively.

The news was unveiled on Tuesday through an 80’s workout-style launch video (we don’t know why either) accompanied by details of its features, which include ad-free news articles, a thread reader, bookmark folders and custom navigation.

Paid users also gain access to Labs, where they can try out features which are currently being tested by the team at Twitter – such as pinned DM conversations and longer video uploads on desktop.

“With Twitter Blue, we are not only bringing the most active people on Twitter more of what they want, but we’re also supporting local, national, and ad-free journalism in a more direct way.

“It’s early days for Twitter Blue and we’re looking forward to listening, learning, and building out even more features and tools over the coming months,” Twitter managers Sara Beykpour and Smita Gupta write in a blog post.

However, some users still appear unconvinced by the offering, instead criticising the paywalled features:

Others, meanwhile, referenced the “this website is free” meme and other past comments about the social media platform coming without a price:

It is not yet known when the subscription service will roll out to other countries, such as those in Europe.
