The Tennessee Titans made a stunning move on Tuesday, as the team announced it had fired general manager Jon Robinson.
Buy Titans TicketsNow, that’s not to say that Robinson wasn’t in hot water at all, but the team did just sign him to a multi-year extension this past offseason, and the fact that Tennessee did it during the season makes it even more shocking.
The Titans are currently 7-5 and on their way to another AFC South title, but there’s no question this team isn’t built for much more than winning one of the worst divisions in the NFL — and that’s on Robinson.
With Robinson gone, the Titans will now turn to vice president of player personnel, Ryan Cowden, who will take over for the rest of the year.
However, Titans head coach Mike Vrabel is expected to have “significant power” over personnel decisions moving forward, per Aaron Wilson of KPRC2.
As you’d expect, shock was the theme after Robinson’s firing.
Jon Robinson created the higher standard that ended up getting him fired once he couldn’t break through to the next level #Titans https://t.co/v42p6HHA9G

All jokes aside. I know the AJ Brown trade was a bad one but I think there’s something more to this Jon Robinson firing.
Winning teams heading towards the Playoffs don’t just fired their GM. 🤔

Signed Clowney and Beasley to big money deals
Cut Saffold without an adequate replacementThere are other problems and a few hits mixed in there as well, but ultimately that series of moves led to him losing his job.

The AJ Brown trade got J Rob fired.
Oh my god. I really cannot believe this one right here.
They better have a GREAT plan for a replacement cause I remember the days before Jon Robinson.
I bet Vrabel gave an ultimatum…#Titans BOMBSHELL https://t.co/Tt6znh9bOI

The firing of GM Jon Robinson is just as big of a commitment to HC Mike Vrabel as it is an indictment of JRob. #Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk is committed to empowering Vrabel and giving him a championship caliber roster. Chose her HC over her GM.

Titans coach Mike Vrabel didn't want to trade AJ Brown. Jon Robinson did it anyway. On Sunday Brown had 119 yards and 2 TDs as his new team blew out the Titans. And now Robinson is paying the price. https://t.co/ENqmVGosx7
— Michael David Smith (@MichaelDavSmith) December 6, 2022
Not saying Todd Downing is here long term, more so why Vrabel wouldn't fire him in-season disrespectfully like that.
— Allan Bell (@AllanBell247) December 6, 2022
Chris Ballard outlasting Jon Robinson is so wild and wrong on, like, 7 different fronts
— Easton Freeze (@eastonfreeze) December 6, 2022
The #Titans have had some notable misses (trading for Julio, Isaiah Wilson in Round 1, AJ Brown fiasco, etc.). There are things to point at.
But firing GM Jon Robinson now would seem to indicate there was more going on.
They just signed Robinson to an extension in February…

The #Titans are firing GM Jon Robinson. I have to assume the AJ Brown trade and his performance on Sunday was the last straw for ownership. Ownership chose Vrabel over Robinson.
Wow. This is massive.

You can give Jon Robinson credit for turning the franchise around and ALSO admit that he was absolutely PUTRID the past three years. Both can be true.
The NFL has always been a league of "What have you done for me lately", and what JRob has done lately hasn't been good.

When the smoke clears, Jon Robinson deserves a ton of credit for turning the Titans franchise around

Jon Robinson has played a significant part in what has been one of the most consistent teams in the NFL over the past handful of seasons.
Firing him is a surprise, doing so in Week 14 with Tennessee on the doorstep of another division title is downright shocking. https://t.co/hacCHoxd3A

there has to be more to the story with Jon Robinson's firing. lets go, insiders
— Gregg Rosenthal (@greggrosenthal) December 6, 2022
Is Jon Robinson the only GM in history to have only winning seasons and get fired?
— Sundays in Nashville (@SundaysinNash) December 6, 2022
To fire Jon Robinson in-season, Amy Adams Strunk had to be really angry #Titans Unlocked https://t.co/EpXbBUrSuR pic.twitter.com/zQW7PvFeiG
— Paul Kuharsky (@PaulKuharskyNFL) December 6, 2022
Jon Robinson gave Bud Dupree a massive amount of money coming off a torn ACL in 2021.
Since then, he's had seven sacks and has missed a ton of time.
He traded his only playmaker in A.J. Brown despite the HC not being on board with the move.
— Marcus Mosher (@Marcus_Mosher) December 6, 2022
Let's also not forget that he gave up a 2022 second-round pick for Julio Jones.
Julio was so bad that they waived him later that year.
— Marcus Mosher (@Marcus_Mosher) December 6, 2022
It also wouldn’t shock me if in the off-season Vrabel was offered full roster control like Belichick… But we shall see.
— Zach Bingham (@Bada_Bingham) December 6, 2022
The #Titans have not had a losing season since hiring Jon Robinson as GM in 2016. They're on the brink of clinching the AFC South once again. From a pure timing standpoint, this is a bid odd.
— Ari Meirov (@MySportsUpdate) December 6, 2022
Reminder that Mike Vrabel said AJ Brown wouldn't be on the trade block as long as he was head coach and was clearly pissed when Jon Robinson traded him on draft night. pic.twitter.com/1OyTKYqugJ
— Austin Gayle (@austingayle_) December 6, 2022
Mike Vrabel is certain to have a say in who replaces Jon Robinson for now, and more importantly after the season is over.
The coach has significantly outperformed the GM. They both got extensions that were announced Feb. 8, 2022. #Titans
— Paul Kuharsky (@PaulKuharskyNFL) December 6, 2022
Former #Titans GM Jon Robinson had some misses in the first round including Caleb Farley, Isaiah Wilson. But he had some pretty good mid-late round picks in Kevin Byard, Derrick Henry. But another problem is none of the first-round picks made it to a 2nd contract.
— TURRON DAVENPORT (@TDavenport_NFL) December 6, 2022
firing GM the Tuesday after Week 13 seems very reactionary to AJ Brown dunking on them with 8 catches for 119 and 2 TDs just 48 hours ago
if AJ Brown twists his ankle on his first route & sits the rest of the game, do the Titans still fire Jon Robinson today? https://t.co/qBTSeqcbAt
— Warren Sharp (@SharpFootball) December 6, 2022
Ryan Cowden has been beside Jon Robinson for all the things that have resulted in Robinson's firing.
There is not a strong case at all for him to be the permanent replacement. #Titans
— Paul Kuharsky (@PaulKuharskyNFL) December 6, 2022
Jon Robinson’s firing is an absolute stunner.
The Titans clearly aren’t satisfied with simply winning the AFC South.
Having the league’s most recent Coach of the Year should make this quite an attractive job too.
— Will Boling (@will_boling) December 6, 2022
The Titans just fired GM Jon Robinson, who has built one of the best rosters in the NFL, helped the organization hire Mike Vrabel and has the team on the verge of a seventh consecutive winning record since he was hired in 2016.
