The Washington Commanders downgraded defensive end Chase Young to out for Sunday’s Week 1 opener against the Arizona Cardinals.
Of course, Young’s status for Sunday created quite a stir on social media, particularly Twitter. The reactions were wild, leading some to label Young a bust, while others insinuating he doesn’t care and there were some with more reasonable takes.
Buy Commanders TicketsIt’s important for everyone to know Young is dealing with a neck injury. While a stinger may seem minor in the grand scheme of things, it’s still an injury to the neck. You don’t take chances there. Young said last week he was ready. Head coach Ron Rivera and defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio praised Young’s work ethic. Ultimately, while Young is now cleared for contact, the Commanders want to see how he responds to contact in practice.
Ben Standig of The Athletic reported Young could be out until Week 3.
Let’s look at some of those Twitter reactions.
This is correct
Commanders nation. Giving Chase Young crap for not playing is ridiculous. You have no idea what a neck stinger can be at the NFL level. Do better. #commanders

From a Giants perspective
Chase Young's dominance as a rookie and how he was going to bring nightmares to the NFC East for a decade feels so long ago. Injuries in this sport suck, but such a huge part of the game. Can Young ever get back to being the player he was?

5th-year option
Curious of your thoughts on Chase Young.
I'll admit, I was wrong. I wanted the team to pick up his fifth-year option over the summer.
But I think Rivera made the right choice with a prove it year. pic.twitter.com/e7Udo5HwSf

I lightly criticized #Commanders for not picking up Young’s fifth-year option. The chances of me being proven right have taken an early hit.

Reasonable take here
I expected Chase Young’s ceiling to be TJ Watt
I expected his floor to be Aidan Hutchinson
What he actually is?

Yeah Chase Young is dealing with a NECK injury. From a play where he did everything right and got a hit on the QB. Settle down y'all #HTTC https://t.co/srUn795AE5

This is a Ronald Rivera Special with EXTRA cheese. Chase AND Ronald need to go elsewhere. I think if we're lucky we might get a bag of pork rinds for them.
I heard that Chase has actually been diagnosed with a missing spine. Ronald too…
