A Twitter edit button is being rolled out in a number of countries. The new feature, which gives users a 30-minute window in which to make changes to their tweets, has been undergoing internal tests over the last few weeks.
Now members of the Twitter Blue subscription service in Canada, Australia and New Zealand will get the chance to try it out, the Daily Star reports. Users with access to the feature will be able to make up to five edits in the 30 minutes after their original post.
Any tweets that have been edited will be marked with a pencil icon, so other users know they have been altered. Users will also be able to view a version history for each edited tweet, so they can see what changes have been made.
Although not yet officially available in the UK, some users have found ways to access it. Matt Navarra, a social media consultant, sent what he described as "the first edited tweet from the UK" - though others disputed that description.
He advised UK users who wish to access the feature to set a VPN to Canada on their desktop or laptop. It will not work on the mobile app, though, and will still only be available to Twitter Blue users.
Twitter revealed earlier in 2022 they were working on an edit button, describing it as the platform's "most requested feature to date". At the time testing was revealed, Twitter said it was mindful of suggestions bad actors could use the feature to spread misinformation.
The testing phase would be used to monitor this and other potential issues, it said. In a blog post, the company wrote: "We’ll also be paying close attention to how the feature impacts the way people read, write and engage with tweets."
