Best TV shows on TV tonight

Race Across The World, 9 pm, BBC One

There are five new pairs of travellers going head-to-head, including two father-and-daughter duos, as the fabulous BAFTA-winning series returns for a third outing, this time in Canada. Starting in Vancouver, the couples must race across 16,000km by land, with a tiny cash budget, no smartphones and no internet access, to the finishing line in St John’s, Newfoundland, on the Atlantic coast.

With £20,000 up for grabs for the fastest team, things get off to a frustrating start for best mates Cathie and Tricia, but their unbridled joy at seeing bison chomping in the snow is lovely to watch. Expect bears, mountains and many differences of opinions as the teams begin their epic adventure.

The Bay, 9pm, ITV1

The traumatised Metcalf children have been struggling to process the loss of their mum, Beth, in a house fire, and this week hands-off dad Dean (Joe Armstrong) shocks them and everyone else by announcing he’s going back to work! Meanwhile, there are serious ructions in their Family Liaison Officer Jenn’s own blended brood, as her partner Chris clashes with his rebellious teenage daughter, Erin.

The investigation into the arson attack is unfolding nicely, with impressive performances from Armstrong as the dad at the heart of the case and Tom Taylor as the oldest sibling forced into the role of a surrogate parent.

Secret Life of the Forest, 8 pm, Channel 5

Autumn comes to Yorkshire this week, in this series following the people and animals of Dalby and Cropton Forests. The changing season doesn’t just bring vibrant colours and leaf fall – any trees that could pose a risk to the public have to be trimmed or felled, meaning apprentice forester Holly has to get to grips with a chainsaw, as well as memorising 40 different species for an upcoming exam.

Meanwhile, ecologist Cath watches for signs of conflict around the pond, as the once-cute younger beavers start outgrowing the family group.

Kirstie and Phil's Love it or List It: Brilliant Builds, 8pm, C4

Tonight, Kirstie Allsopp and Phil Spencer continue their look back at past recommendations they have given homeowners. Ash and Charanjeet’s cramped house in Harrow saw their teenagers sharing a room (which was also their parents’ home office), and a fridge by the front door, while Gloria and Tom in West Sussex disagreed over whether their seaside home was large enough for their young family.

As the years have gone by, did Kirstie’s advice for an extension give them the space they needed – or did they end up moving?

Best box set on TV tonight

Shadow and Bone, Netflix

Shadow and Bone is perfect for fantasy fans waiting for their next big fix. Season 2 picks up with Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) on the run after escaping from General Kirigan's (Ben Barnes) grasp at the end of the first season. Here, she's determined to bring down the Shadow Fold, the rift of darkness that divides Ravka in half. Kirigan's got other ideas, though, as he's returned from the center of the Fold with powerful new monsters at his beck and call.  Expect more magic, more characters, and more romance.

Best film on TV tonight

Ice Cold in Alex, All4

Sylvia Syms died in January, aged 89, and although her contribution to cinema was long and varied (she recently narrated the BBC’s Talking Pictures), her role as a nurse in this gripping World War Two drama is perhaps the role she is best remembered for. Based on true events, the movie’s appeal lies in the emotions stirred by the interrelationship of all four main characters, as they and their battered ambulance dice with death at the hands of Germans, minefields and sandstorms, and dream of ice-cold beer in Alexandria. Director J Lee Thompson conjures up sustained suspense.
