Best TV shows on TV tonight

The Hidden World of Hospitality, 8 pm, BBC Two

Thousands of workers have left the hospitality industry due to Brexit regulations and Covid lockdowns, with Tom Kerridge calling it ‘the worst staffing crisis I’ve ever seen’. Tonight, Tom visits a hotel in London’s Docklands which runs a training program for unemployed local people, with 133 having come through it so far. It’s clear that for many of them it offers confidence and a fresh outlook on life as well as the chance of a job in the industry.

This episode also highlights a South Shields fish-and-chip shop with a family dynamic that draws not just loyal customers but also loyal staff. ‘We can’t get rid of them,’ jokes owner Richard – a ‘problem’ that many businesses would love to have right now.

Patrick Melrose, 9 pm, Sky Arts

First shown on Sky Atlantic in 2018, this drama series starring Benedict Cumberbatch is getting a freeview premiere on Sky Arts. Based on the novels by Edward St Aubyn, the drama – which won awards including BAFTAs for Best Mini-Series and Best Leading Actor – tells the story of the aristocratic Patrick (Cumberbatch), struggling through addiction and recovery following a traumatic childhood. It’s adapted by Us and One Day writer David Nicholls, and also stars Jessica Raine, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Hugo Weaving.

The Dog Academy, 8 pm, Channel 4

As the series draws to a close, the trainers at the stunning Shropshire manor house have two new recruits and their owners to tame and train. First up is one-year-old poodle Daisy, who is described by owners Wendy and Dahana as lovable 90 per cent of the time, but try to put her harness on or groom her and she turns snappy.

Then there’s seven-year-old Marley, a Yorkshire terrier with severe anxiety problems, meaning owner Louise can’t date or go on holiday and feels like a prisoner in her own home. Can trainers Nanci and Jo and Sean and Kamal figure out how to help the problematic pooches?

★★★★ RP

The Supervet: Noel Fitzpatrick, 9 pm, Channel 4

In the final episode in the run, a cat who was testing the limit of his nine lives is brought in after falling from a great height. Oz broke his ankle badly and following an unsuccessful visit to the local vet, his owners were worried Oz would have to have his leg amputated – but Noel thinks there may be a way that it could be saved.

Elsewhere at the practice, bull mastiff Bayleigh has a CT scan which reveals bone cancer, so Noel suggests an implant of his own invention, and Labrador puppy Ollie is rushed in with a severely damaged spinal cord after being hit by a car.

Best box set on TV tonight

The Witcher season 3Netflix

All eight episodes of The Witcher season 3 are now available to stream on Netflix, so you can see Henry Cavill's last adventure (before he hands his swords over to Liam Hemsworth) all in one go. This latest installment sees Geralt and Yennefer attempting to prep Ciri as forces from all across The Continent compete to try and capture her. Travelling to the magical academy at Aretuza seems like a safe place to start with, but its not long before danger arrives in this action-packed third adventure.

Best film on TV tonight

Top Hat, 10:40 pm, BBC Four

Musicals such as Top Hat were a form of escapism in the lean times of the 1930s – and what do you know, almost 90 years later they still are. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers star in one of their best-known films, and if the fantastic Art Deco style of the era and semi-screwball plot doesn’t draw you in, the song-and-dance numbers will.

These include the title song, Isn’t This Is a Lovely Day? and Cheek to Cheek. The RKO Story: Tales from Hollywood continues immediately after the film, with an episode devoted to the career of Ginger Rogers.
