Best TV shows on TV tonight

Casualty, 8.25 pm, BBC One

Jan (Di Botcher) is distraught in tonight’s powerful episode, as she says a tearful goodbye to ex-husband Gethin (Robert Pugh). He has decided to end his life on his own terms at noon – using powerful pain medication swiped by Jan from a deceased patient last week. At work, clock-watching Jan is on edge and emotional. Then, when she returns home that evening, there’s a shock in store... and it involves her police officer wife Ffion (Stirling Gallacher). Is Jan heading for a prison sentence? Elsewhere, Jacob has a very revealing day. First, he’s caught taking a risky selfie by Teddy – and then he sends it to Charlie of all people!

Trooping the Colour, 10.30 am, BBC One

To mark King Charles III’s first Trooping the Colour as monarch and the first King’s Birthday Parade for 72 years, today’s ceremony will feature the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards, with soldiers of the Household Division and King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery taking part alongside musicians from the Massed Bands. The ceremony will also include soldiers from the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards, the 1st Battalion Irish Guards and, for the first time, the 1st Battalion London Guards, lining the route along The Mall. You can see highlights of the ceremony tonight (6.10 pm, BBC Two).

Annika, 9.15 pm, BBC One/iPlayer (box set)

Glasgow’s Marine Homicide Unit detectives are remarkably patient with their boss. Leaving aside the fact that they never question who she’s talking to when she addresses the viewer, Annika (Nicola Walker) brings ‘horrible sweeties’ to
the office instead of cakes and, on arrival at a crime scene, she always starts banging on about mythology. Tonight, it’s literally all Greek. Luckily, she has other attributes, such as being an ace detective and having a sense of humour. This first series wraps up with the two final episodes – and there’s a humdinger of a twist in the last one! A second series is due to air on Alibi later this year.

George Michael Night,8.25 pm, BBC Two

George Michael would have turned 60 this month (25 June), which seems unthinkable remembering him in the early days of Wham! videos for hits such as Club Tropicana and Bad Boys. Tonight, BBC Two pays tribute to the much-loved singer with a bumper 90-minute compilation At the BBC (Wham! were on Top of the Pops a lot in those early days), while Live in London (10.40 pm) is a feature-length recording of two Earls Court concerts recorded in August 2008. From an acapella warm-up with his backing singers, through a set list including Careless Whisper, Fast Love, Everything She Wants and Outside (George cheekily dons a cop outfit and shades at this point), it’s a real treat for fans.

Birds of a Feather: 30 Years of Laughs, 8.25 pm, Channel 5

Tonight, Channel 5’s weekly nostalgia fest settles on the sitcom Birds of a Feather, which aired on BBC1 from 1989 to 1998 (attracting viewing figures as high as 20 million) before being revived on ITV in 2014. This documentary hears from writers Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran, plus some of the stars of the show.

Best film on TV tonight
