Best TV shows on TV tonight

Clean Sweep, 9 pm, BBC Four

We’re always intrigued by a crime drama that looks to turn the genre on its head - and that can definitely be said for this intense Irish thriller. Inspired by real-life events, the six-parter follows housewife and mum-of-three Shelly Mohan (Charlene McKenna), who shoots dead her former partner-in-crime Charlie (Adam Fergus) when he threatens to expose her dodgy past to her husband, Garda detective Jason (Barry Ward).

As a murder hunt is launched, it’s Jason who must track down the killer… Already a hit in Ireland and the US, we’re certain this will be popular in its new BBC slot.

Casualty, 8:25 pm, BBC One

Last Saturday, Casualty left us grappling with more cliffhangers than a rock-climbing convention. Tonight it picks up directly after the crash caused by an exhausted Donna (Jaye Jacobs). The nurse is very much wide awake and weaving a wild web of lies to distance herself from blame.

There’s also a furious fall-out after Sah’s kiss confession, resulting in Teddy dumping Paige. Plus terrific scenes between two of the show’s most endearing characters when Rash and Rida have an honest heart-to-heart about faith, family and working in the ED. Meanwhile, keep an eye out for scene-stealing guest star Amy Robbins!

Champion, 9:15 pm, BBC One

After feeling like she’s been pulled in different directions and constantly disappointing her closest friends and family, this week Vita Champion (Déja J Bowens) thinks she’s found a way to support her manager Mark as well as her friends Honey and Tayo. She even manages to somehow shoehorn in a little tribute to her mum, Aria (Nadine Marshall).

But, as Vita’s ex, Memet, says, ‘I got pulled into the world of the Champions and I’m starting to realise you lot are messy’. He’s not wrong, and the family has a spectacular and very public falling out. Has Vita distanced herself even further from her loved ones? And can the Champion brand recover from this latest setback?

Buckingham Palace with Alexander Armstrong, 9:15 pm, Channel 5

There are surprising secrets about Buckingham Palace revealed by Alexander Armstrong in this series, not least that it has an ATM in the basement! Tonight, Alexander goes back in time to when the palace was first bought by King George III and his new bride Queen Charlotte, who set about getting a zebra and an elephant in the garden. What they didn’t have, though, at first, was a toilet – servants followed them round with little portaloos in case they got caught short!

The Bear season 2Disney Plus

Jeremy Allen White won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of troubled yet brilliant chef Carmen ‘Carmy’ Berzatto last year, and Disney Plus are serving up a second serving of the acclaimed drama. After saving their off-beat Chicago sandwich shop following his brother’s suicide, Carmy and his team are hoping to revamp and relaunch the restaurant this year, but soon find true excellence requires real sacrifice.

Overflowing with stress-inducing drama, mouth-watering food, and some deeply tender moments, it’s a wonderfully shot examination of grief, friendship and hope that shows the first season was no flash in the pan.

Best film on TV tonight

The Full Monty, 10:25 pm, BBC One

This multi-award-winning comedy became one of the most successful British movies in history on its release in 1997. Robert Carlyle leads a group of unemployed friends including Tom Wilkinson and Mark Addy as they try to raise money by putting on their own version of a Chippendales show. Carlyle, Addy and many of the original cast returned for a mini-series of the same name released earlier this year on Disney+.
