WhatsApp Obsession: The Murder of Stephanie Hansen

This sad true-crime documentary opens with footage of Sheldon Rodrigues reporting his housemate Stephanie Hansen’s death – saying that he had been at work. But WhatsApp messages showed that he had been harassing her and he was found guilty of stabbing her to death. Stephanie’s family and police officers tell the story. Hollie Richardson

Taking an original approach, this documentary uses a mixture of raw footage, animation and re-enactments to tell the stories of five Sudanese citizens trying to survive amid the turmoil in their country. It has a dreamy quality but that never overrides the country’s various nightmarish realities. PH
The Trials of Pa Salieu
10.10pm, BBC Three
The trials of Coventry rapper Pa Salieu started in earnest in 2018 when he was involved in a fight following the fatal stabbing of his friend. Salieu was convicted of possessing a bottle as an offensive weapon, and admitted a charge of violent disorder at a later incident. This thoughtful documentary focuses on the aftermath of his prison sentence, during which he starts to rebuild his career while dealing with grief, survivor’s guilt and the demands of his parole officers. A mockumentary that manages to avoid mocking most of its subjects, Molly Gordon and Nick Lieberman’s sweet film follows a season at a financially precarious but much-loved youth performing-arts summer school. With the director having had a stroke, her son, “business vlogger” Troy (Jimmy Tatro), takes charge, much to the bemusement of the kids and staff, including teachers and besties Rebecca-Diane (Gordon) and Amos (Ben Platt). A love letter to institutions such as this that provide havens for the unconforming and outcast, young and old. Simon Wardell
