TV Cops Reflect On Iconic Roles At Emmys

Actor Whitney Rydbeck, Known For Iconic Roles, Dies At 79

During the recent Emmys ceremony, Jimmy Smits, Niecy Nash-Betts, and Don Johnson took the stage to discuss their iconic roles as TV cops.

Smits reminisced about his character, Det. Bobby Simone from 'NYPD Blue,' describing him as a blend of strength, sensitivity, and street smarts. Nash-Betts, on the other hand, humorously portrayed her character, Deputy Raineesha Williams from 'Reno 911!,' as someone who managed with only a 'marginal knowledge of the law.'

Johnson's portrayal of the maverick cop in 'Nash Bridges' was highlighted for his unorthodox methods but unwavering commitment to bringing criminals to justice.

Smits playfully noted the unfortunate fate of his character in 'NYPD Blue,' who met his demise by the end of the series. In contrast, Nash-Betts jokingly pointed out her characters' tendency to always survive, quipping, 'Hell, I’m Black and I survived Dahmer,' in reference to her role in the acclaimed Netflix drama 'Dahmer,' for which she won an Emmy in 2022.
