The Turkish Embassy in Dublin has thanked the Irish people for generosity in the wake of a devastating earthquake hit Turkey and Syria, but says it can no longer accept some items.
Many kind-hearted Dubliners had earlier this week set up fundraisers to help the victims of the disaster, which happened last Sunday. The powerful quake of 7.8 magnitude on the Richter scale hit southern Turkey and northern Syria, which was then followed by a second 7.5 quake in Syria.
The death toll has now reached more than 25,000. Thousands of people were injured in the regions, as rescue workers continue to look for survivors.
The Turkish Embassy of Ireland which is located in Ballsbridge in Dublin announced yesterday that they don't need some physical donations after receiving over 45 tonnes of goods since Monday.
According to the Turkish Embassy of Ireland, they do still need blankets and sleeping bags while cash donations are also welcome. In a post on Twitter on Friday, they wrote: "A special thank you to all our friends for all their donations.
"Thanks to you, in three days we managed to collect over 45 tons of donations which will be gradually transported to the areas most affected by the earthquake.
“Due to logistical reasons for the time being we won’t be able to accept any further donations of goods other than blankets and sleeping bags for which there is still a need. Donations via bank transfer is also welcome.
"We thank you for your ongoing support and solidarity," they added. Meanwhile, the embassy has also set up a bank account to collect donations to help the victims of the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.
An Post is also appealing for charitable donations, with cash and card donations made through the postal service not being subject to transaction fees.
