Euro 2024 continues with Turkey beating Georgia 3-1 in a thrilling clash which included some of the best goals of the tournament so far.
Real Madrid teenager Arda Guler scored on his Euros debut, as Turkey clinched victory. Mert Mulder had put Turkey ahead after 25 minutes, but his goal was quickly cancelled out by Georges Mikautadze, who netted his nation’s first ever goal in a major tournament.
Guler struck a curled strike from 25 yards to restore Turkey’s advantage before they sealed the victory with the last kick of the game, as Kerem Arturkoglu passed the ball into an empty net.
The Group F match got off to a difficult start however when fans were seen clashing as torrential rain fell at the stadium. Supporters were forced to race for cover but the roof of the Westfalenstadion, home of Borussia Dortmund, was breached by the sheer volume of rain, soaking many fans after several heavy downpours inside the ground.
Vincenzo Montella’s Turkey went into the tournament in terrible form, having not won any of their last five outings. But they have a talented squad with players such as Real Madrid’s Arda Guler and Benfica’s Orkun Kokcu looking to put their stamp on this tournament and ensure a better performance than their bottom-placed finish at Euro 2020.
In contrast, Georgia are taking part in their first-ever international tournament after they beat Greece on penalties in the qualification play-offs. Since then they have played a confidence-building 3-1 win over Montenegro and, led by Napoli winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, will hope to cause an upset this evening.
