The Mayor of Turin joined Liverpool's Lord Mayor and Reds great Ian Rush to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the Heysel Stadium disaster.
As part of the official handover of the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest, the Mayor of Turin Stefano Lo Russo visited Anfield Stadium today to lay a wreath at the Heysel memorial. He was joined by Lord Mayor of Liverpool Roy Gladden and Ian Rush, who played for both Liverpool and Juventus.
The disaster occurred on May 29 1985 at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels prior to the European Cup Final between Liverpool and Juventus. In total 39 people - mostly Juventus fans - lost their lives in the tragedy.
Turin Mayor Stefano Lo Russo is in Liverpool to officially hand over the Eurovision mantle. The Italian city hosted the world famous contest last year and Liverpool is set to welcome the competition this May.
Also attending the wreath-laying ceremony at Anfield today was Peter Hooton of Liverpool band The Farm. Mr Hooton hosted a delegation of Juventus fans in Liverpool just months after the Heysel disaster and continues to help promote relations between the two clubs.
