Tuned In students from Derry dreaming of trip of a lifetime to Disneyland Paris

A Derry support group for families with children suffering from disabilities or learning difficulties is continuing to fundraise for a trip of a lifetime.

The Tuned Inn project has put together a huge fundraising drive over the last several months to make a special groups dream come true.

The community initiative works with people with disabilities empowering them through digital and creative arts.

They're hoping to fund specialist care and equipment for 30 people with a range of disabilities for a five-day trip to Disneyland Paris.

In their latest effort, the group have teamed up with Glenkeen Furnishings.

Glenkeen are doing this is by selling tickets for £15 only for the Tuned In Project, where all monies collected will be donated directly to the fundraiser.

Speaking to MyDerry , Caroline Wilson, from Glenkeen Furnishings, said: "The money raised will help pay towards the cost of taking young adults with disabilities on a trip of a lifetime to Disneyland.

"We have all found it hard during Covid but it’s been extra stressful for them as they weren’t able to meet up with their friends and were knocked out of their routines, this trip will hopefully be a release for them and help them create memories and understand that happier times are ahead.

"Tuned in is fantastic as it provides a facility where all adults with disabilities can participate in music and arts.

"It is a very progressive and fun place to go and they all enjoy it, there are lots of trips out and concerts and it’s great to see the enjoyment they have and how it helps them communicate and express themselves with dance and music.

"It also helps them to mix in the community and feel accepted and develop life skills."

Aine McFadden, Team Leader at the Tuned In Project, previously spoke to MyDerry about the efforts to achieve this incredible trip for their members.

She said: "This really is the trip of a lifetime for so many of our students. As adults we take for granted getting away on holiday with our friends or partners and for some of our students this has never been a reality for them.

"This trip will give them the opportunity to build on their independence skills which in turn will improve their self-confidence and empower them with the knowledge that they can do a lot more than they ever imagined, as well as getting a holiday with their friends!"

"The campaign initially started for a trip that was planned for April 2020 but of course covid made this impossible," Aine added.

"We have had to reschedule the trip three times due to restrictions. Because of all these changes the cost of the trip has increased significantly so the pressure is definitely on to raise the funds!"
