Tulane University has confirmed that protesters have been removed from its campus in a statement released on Wednesday. The university stated that students participating in the 'illegal encampment' were given multiple warnings before officers from the New Orleans Police Department and Louisiana State Police intervened.
The university emphasized that the majority of the protestors were not affiliated with the Tulane community. Police arrested at least 14 protesters, including two Tulane students. Earlier in the week, six individuals were arrested, with one student facing charges of trespassing, resisting arrest, and battery on an officer.
According to the statement, seven students have been suspended, and those involved in the protest have been referred to the Office of Student Conduct for immediate disciplinary action. The university expressed its support for lawful demonstrations but reiterated its opposition to trespassing, hate speech, antisemitism, and bias against religious or ethnic groups. It stated that criminal acts, harassment, intimidation, and violence on campus are not acceptable.
As Wednesday marked the last day of classes for most students, the university announced that classes scheduled in the closed buildings would be conducted remotely. Police and security personnel will continue to be present on campus for the remainder of the semester.
