TUI flight to Newcastle Airport forced to divert less than an hour after take off

A flight to Newcastle Airport was diverted less than an hour into its journey yesterday after the aircraft required an "additional fuel stop".

Passengers travelling on the TUI flight TOM1311 from Skiathos, Greece, to Newcastle International Airport on Wednesday afternoon were diverted soon after take off.

The flight departed from Skiathos at 1.46pm local time but just 40 minutes into the flight it was diverted to Thessaloniki, Greece. It departed again at 3.06pm and TUI confirmed that all passengers arrived safely in Newcastle.

A TUI spokesperson said: "We can confirm that flight TOM1311 from Skiathos to Newcastle was briefly diverted into Thessaloniki yesterday as the aircraft required an additional fuel stop. The aircraft departed shortly after, and customers landed safely in Newcastle yesterday afternoon."

It comes just weeks after a Newcastle flight to Dalaman, in Turkey, had to return to Newcastle Airport after crew reported a 'technical' issue.

Flight trackers showed that the Jet2 flight departed from Newcastle at 3.55pm on September 1. However, after circling the area it returned to the airport at 4.35pm.

Earlier that week a Ryanair flight from Newcastle to Spain had to make an unexpected diversion after a passenger became ill on board. The flight to Alicante, which took off from Newcastle Airport shortly after 8pm on August 30, was diverted to London Stansted Airport where the plane landed at around 8.20pm.
