Tufts University Calls For End To Campus Protest Encampment

Protesters continue to maintain the encampment on the Columbia University campus in New York

Tufts University in Massachusetts has issued a statement calling for an end to the encampment on its Medford-Somerville campus in order for commencement proceedings to proceed smoothly. The university, known for its tradition of civil protest, has allowed a small camp site on the academic quad for the past two weeks as a form of advocacy.

However, university leaders have now stated that the encampment must end, preferably peacefully and voluntarily, to prepare the campus for the upcoming Commencement. Student life staff are expected to engage with protesters to plan for the conclusion of the encampment in the coming days.

The university expressed concerns about recent exchanges with protesters, noting a shift towards escalation and disruption of normal university activities. The message, signed by university president Sunil Kumar and other school leaders, emphasized the importance of maintaining a conducive environment for students to complete the academic year successfully and for the community to celebrate the class of 2024 at Commencement without disruptions.

University officials extended an invitation to the entire community to support the effort to end the encampment peacefully and responsibly. The goal is to ensure that students, their families, and friends can enjoy the upcoming Commencement ceremony without any disturbances.
