Tuesday night could be the coldest of the year so far, the Met Office has announced, as it issued weather warnings for snow and ice across the UK. The forecasting body said the mercury could drop to minus 15C in some sheltered Scottish glens, especially where there is fresh snow cover.
The lowest temperature recorded in the UK so far this year is minus 10.4C, which was recorded at Drumnadrochit near Inverness in the Highlands in the early hours of January 19. Temperatures are set to drop almost six degrees below their coldest last March, when they reached minus 9.1C in Aboyne, Aberdeenshire.
Weather warnings for snow and ice are in place across all four nations of the UK and more are expected to be issued as Arctic air sweeps across the country. A yellow weather warning for snow and ice will be in place for London, the Thames Valley, East Anglia, parts of the Midlands and South Wales from 9pm on Monday night until 10am on Tuesday.
