'Tuchel will not be fooled' - National media verdict as Chelsea progress to Club World Cup final

Romelu Lukaku was in desperate need of a goal heading into Chelsea's Club World Cup semi-final with Al Hilal on Thursday night and he got it.

The Belgian was on hand to tap home the only goal of the game in the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday evening, setting up a final with Palmeiras this weekend.

Thomas Tuchel is eager to secure the trophy for the first time in Chelsea's history, with Rafael Benitez having previously failed in 2012.

But how did the national media view the Chelsea performance? football.london takes a look at how the biggest publications reacted to the victory.

The Mirror

"Romelu Lukaku needed a stroke of luck to get him scoring again - and this time it came gift wrapped.

"Chelsea striker Lukaku could not miss from five yards out as he was the beneficiary of a horrible defensive mix-up at the heart of the Al-Hilal defence.

"They needed some good fortune because this was a far from convincing Chelsea performance.

"Chelsea were wasteful at one end, sloppy in defence at the other and it took some excellent saves from keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga to make sure Al-Hilal did not snatch an equaliser."

BBC Sport

"Chelsea dominated from the start against the Saudi Arabian side, and their breakthrough came from Lukaku just after the half-hour mark.

"Kai Havertz's left-wing cross was inadvertently headed into the Belgian's path by Yasser Al Shahrani, and he rifled home from point-blank range.

"Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga then denied Moussa Marega from eight yards out, while Odion Ighalo and Kanno saw shots blocked as Chelsea struggled to put the game to bed.

"But the European champions held on in the end and, in Saturday's final, will have the chance to avenge defeat in this competition a decade after their last appearance."

The Guardian

"The most important thing is that Chelsea are one game away from winning the lot.

"This was an uneven performance from the European champions and although they stopped Al-Hilal from pulling off a shock, they will have to sharpen up when they face Palmeiras in the Club World Cup final on Saturday.

"Once again there was little edge in the final third. Chelsea missed too many chances and their failure to kill off Al-Hilal almost proved costly, only for Kepa Arrizabalaga to deny Mohamed Kanno and Moussa Marega with two stunning saves in the second half.

"It was not convincing, even if Havertz and Ziyech both went close in the second half. Chelsea, who replaced Jorginho with N’Golo Kanté at half-time, faded as the contest wore on and were indebted to Arrizabalaga in the end. Tuchel will not be fooled."

Sky Sports News

"Romelu Lukaku's first-half strike was enough to send Chelsea through to the Club World Cup final as they held on to beat Al Hilal 1-0 in Abu Dhabi.

"Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal, winners of last season's AFC Champions League, really pushed for an equaliser in the second half as Chelsea lost control of the game, but Kepa Arrizabalaga proved to be the hero for the Premier League side.

"Chelsea had a fine chance to bury the game with 10 minutes to go, as Lukaku pulled it back for substitute Mason Mount, who was on the bench after picking up an injury in last Saturday's FA Cup win over Plymouth, only for Al Hilal to pull out a last-ditch block."
