Following a 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck Taiwan on Wednesday morning, tsunami warnings were issued for several countries in the region. However, Taiwan, Japan, and the Philippines have all canceled their tsunami warnings after observing minimal impact from the tsunami waves.
In Taiwan, tsunami heights reached nearly half a meter in Chenggong, located approximately 100 km south of the quake's epicenter. While the observed tsunami heights were relatively low, it is important to note that tsunami waves can significantly increase in height as they approach the shore.
Similarly, in Japan, a 0.3-meter wave was reported on Okinawa Island, but no significant damage was caused, and the Naha airport was reopened shortly after. The Philippines also reported no significant sea level disturbances following the earthquake.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has stated that the threat of a tsunami to the United States has largely passed. While minor sea level fluctuations may continue for the next few hours, the center has advised government agencies to monitor coastal conditions before resuming normal activities.
For other regions in the Pacific, including Guam, Indonesia, Northern Marianas, Palau, South Korea, Vietnam, and Yap, tsunami waves less than 0.3 meters may still be observed. However, the overall risk of a tsunami has diminished, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure public safety.
