More than four months after the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) proposed a hike in basic fare for bus passengers, the State Government is yet to take a call.
However, in the recent past, given the TSRTC’s decisions, commuters on different bus services, and depending on the different bus stages, have been paying more for a ride.
While a ‘beleaguered’ TSRTC management maintains that there has been no hike in basic fare, people have been invariably paying more on account of the safety cess of ₹1 and fuel cess of ₹2 per passenger. The ticket fares are being rounded off to a multiple of ₹5.
When contacted, TSRTC managing director V.C. Sajjanar said, “A proposal was given in December last year. So far, there is no update on this from the State Government who has to take a decision.”
The fare hike proposal of up to 30 paise per kilometre was mooted given the hike in diesel prices. Since then, prices have continued to soar, and the transport juggernaut finds itself in an unenviable position even as it suffers losses to the tune of up to ₹7 crore a day.
