Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust has re-issued a plea for visitors at a popular nature reserve to stop feeding birds amid the largest ever Avian Influenza outbreak. Back in January 2022, the Trust, which cares for more than 40 nature reserves across the county, urged visitors not to feed the birds at Attenborough Nature Reserve - its most popular site - due to the ongoing risk of Avian Flu to wild bird populations.
Last summer, despite efforts to prevent the spread, the charity says it had to deal with one of the worst inland outbreaks which killed around 500 birds. The Trust has now felt it necessary to once again warn visitors about the dangers of feeding birds following the news that the current outbreak has killed more than 200 million birds.
Back in August 2022, more than 150 birds were found dead at the reserve due to a suspected outbreak of bird flu. The reserve, which sits alongside the River Trent, is where many birds arrive from the continent to breed.
