WASHINGTON _ President Donald Trump will be in North Carolina on Monday, the same day Republican National Convention delegates will renominate Trump for president in Charlotte, according to a White House official.
Charlotte was scheduled to host the entire convention beginning Monday, but the state's social distancing mandates led Trump to move the event. He is now expected to deliver his acceptance speech from the White House property on Thursday.
Trump will visit a Farmers to Families Food Box program site in Mills River, North Carolina, on Monday afternoon along with his daughter and adviser Ivanka Trump and Agriculture Sec. Sonny Perdue. Mills River is in Henderson County, about a two-hour drive from Charlotte.
Trump had previously indicated he would be in North Carolina on Monday, though he has left his exact plans uncertain. Trump is expected to stop by the Charlotte Convention Center where delegates are meeting, Politico and The New York Times reported.
Trump will arrive in Fletcher, North Carolina, aboard Marine One, the presidential helicopter, at 2:20 p.m. Eastern time. He is to deliver remarks in Mills River at 3:30 p.m. The Republican National Convention's main business is scheduled to take place Monday morning from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Trumps and Perdue will tour Flavor First Growers and Packers which partners with Baptists on Mission to build food boxes, which are packaged and delivered to families in need.
The president will deliver remarks outside the facility after the tour.
"I am incredibly excited to join the President in North Carolina as he sees first-hand the incredible work being done through our Farmers to Families Food Box program," Ivanka Trump said in a statement.
"With nearly 70 million boxes of nutritious, locally-sourced fresh fruit, vegetable, milk and meat delivered to date, we are deeply appreciative of our strong and innovative partners like Baptists on Mission and Flavor First Growers and Packers that allow us to continue the fight to feed our nation's hungry, support our farmers and strengthen our workforce."
The program is part of the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program, which was authorized under the CARES Act. It has delivered nearly 70 million food boxes with food grown by American farmers, according to the White House.
It will be Trump's 11th visit to North Carolina as president. He visited the Research Triangle Park in late July.
The Republican National Committee, which puts on the convention, plans to have 336 delegates in Charlotte for the business portion of the convention, which includes the formal nominations of Trump and Vice President Mike Pence. Coronavirus health and safety protocols are in place for the convention.
The 336 delegates represent six from each state and territory.
Former Vice President Joe Biden accepted the Democratic presidential nomination Thursday night in Wilmington, Delaware.
"This November, North Carolinians will hold Trump accountable for his broken promises, put his failed presidency to an end, and send Joe Biden to the White House," said Austin Cook, communications director for the North Carolina Democratic Party, in a statement Friday.
