Closing summary

  • The 80th UN general assembly meeting has begun in New York. Donald Trump is expected to speak in about 20 minutes. The White House says he will take aim at “globalist institutions” and discuss his “vision for the world” in his address, which you can follow in our US live blog.

  • Trump’s address comes after a number of key western allies, including the UK, France, Canada and Australia, recognised a Palestinian state in defiance of Washington and to the ire of Israel.

  • British officials fear the US president could recognise Israeli control over illegal settlements on the West Bank in retaliation to this recent international drive to recognise Palestine.

  • After his speech to the UN general assembly, Trump will hold one-on-one meetings with UN secretary general António Guterres and the leaders of Ukraine, Argentina and the EU.

  • The US president will also hold a group meeting with officials from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Turkey, Pakistan, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan, during which he will reportedly discuss what the governance of Gaza could look like after the war, as well as how reconstruction will be funded.

  • Israel is reportedly planning to close the Allenby crossing, the sole gateway between the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Jordan, from Wednesday until further notice.

  • Israel continues its ground offensive to fully occupy Gaza City as deadly Israeli air attacks intensify and ground forces advance into the biggest urban centre in the territory.

  • Gaza’s health ministry warned that fuel shortages could shut down the Gaza Strip’s remaining functioning hospitals by the end of the week amid relentless Israeli attacks. In an update, it said at least 65,382 Palestinian people have been killed and 166,985 others injured in Israeli attacks on Gaza since 7 October 2023.

Death toll from Israeli attacks on Gaza reaches 65,382, says health ministry

At least 65,382 Palestinian people have been killed and 166,985 others injured in Israeli attacks on Gaza since 7 October 2023, the Gaza health ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

At least 38 Palestinian people were killed and 190 others injured in the last 24 hours alone, the ministry, whose figures are generally seen as reliable by the UN, said.

It added in its post on Telegram:

A number of victims are still under the rubble and on the streets, as ambulances and civil defence crews are unable to reach them until now.
