Trump Spent Hours Consulting Grok on How Venezuelans Would React to Maduro's Capture Before US Invasion, Report Says

President Donald Trump reportedly spent hours consulting Elon Musk's Grok chatbot about Venezuela weeks before US forces captured Nicolás Maduro, including asking how Venezuelans would respond if their president were seized.

The reported exchange took place during a private White House meeting with Musk in December 2025. Grok reportedly assessed Maduro as deeply unpopular and said many Venezuelans would likely welcome his removal.

The episode highlights a less explored question surrounding the use of artificial intelligence in government: not whether a chatbot can produce an answer, but how an AI-generated assessment of public sentiment might enter a decision-making process involving military force.

AI Was Asked to Gauge Public Reaction

According to the account of an official present at the meeting, Trump used Grok to discuss questions about his presidency and legacy before turning to Venezuela. The chatbot's reported response focused on Maduro's standing among Venezuelans. Trump later reportedly regarded Grok as 'ingenious' after Maduro was captured and celebrations were reported in parts of Venezuela.

That sequence does not establish that Grok influenced Trump's decision to proceed with the operation. It does, however, show that AI-generated analysis was being used to consider how a foreign population might react to an exceptionally consequential US action. That distinction matters because public reaction is not the same as political stability, intelligence assessment, or evidence of support for a military operation.

The Maduro Operation Was More Than a Public-Reaction Test

US forces apprehended Maduro and his wife in Caracas on 3 January 2026, in an operation officially designated Operation Absolute Resolve. The White House described the action as a targeted operation to apprehend Maduro, while the Justice Department has described it as a military operation to capture him for prosecution in the United States.

The term 'invasion' has also appeared in prediction-market contracts concerning the operation, but it should not be treated as an uncontested legal description of what happened. The reported Grok conversation also came before the operation was publicly announced, meaning the chatbot was being asked about a potential outcome while events were still developing.

Grok's Government Role Is Expanding

The episode comes as Grok moves beyond its consumer chatbot identity and into government and national-security applications. xAI has promoted Grok for government workloads involving intelligence, document analysis, and decision support across classified and unclassified environments. Separately, the Pentagon's AI leadership has said a government version of Grok was used during US military operations in the Iran war.

That wider deployment makes the Venezuela episode significant beyond Trump's individual use of the chatbot. AI systems are increasingly positioned as tools for processing information that would otherwise require analysts, advisers, and officials. But an AI-generated answer remains dependent on the information available to the system, the assumptions embedded in its response, and the quality of the evidence behind it.

Classified Planning Shows the Stakes

The sensitivity surrounding Operation Absolute Resolve became clearer after the Justice Department charged US Army soldier Gannon Ken Van Dyke over alleged misuse of classified information relating to the operation. Prosecutors allege Van Dyke had access to classified information while participating in planning and execution of the Maduro operation and used that information to trade Venezuela-related contracts on Polymarket.

The case is separate from Trump's reported conversation with Grok, and there is no evidence linking the chatbot to Van Dyke's alleged conduct. It nevertheless illustrates how closely guarded information surrounding the operation was before Maduro's capture.

Why the Grok Episode Matters

The significance of the reported exchange is therefore less about whether Grok's assessment of Venezuelan public reaction happened to align with events afterwards. The bigger issue is the path from AI-generated opinion to human decision-making.

A chatbot can rapidly summarise political conditions and generate scenarios, but a prediction about how a population will react cannot by itself establish what that population wants, whether its response will last or what consequences will follow. As AI becomes embedded in government systems, the distinction between a useful analytical tool and an authoritative source of judgement becomes increasingly important.
