Good afternoon, and welcome to the Afternoon Update. Donald Trump has formally accepted the Republican party’s presidential nomination in his first public address since an attempted assassination on Saturday at a rally in Pennsylvania.

Appearing with his ear bandaged, Trump told supporters that had he not moved his head “at the very last instant”, he “would not be here tonight”. His convention speech was riddled with misleading claims – such as that crime increased under the Biden administration. He also promised that if elected, he would run the “largest deportation operation in the history” of the US.

He concluded his speech by telling supporters their “expectations were not big enough” and by promising that America’s future will be “bigger, bigger, better, bolder, brighter, happier, stronger, freer, greater and more united than ever before”. Here are the key takeaways from Trump’s speech.
