Trump says war in Ukraine is ‘very close’ to ending as hostilities resume

  • Donald Trump says the war in Ukraine is “very close” to ending, echoing Russian President Vladimir Putin's earlier claim that the “matter is coming to an end”, despite ongoing intense fighting.
  • Hostilities resumed on Tuesday, ending hopes that a three-day ceasefire could be extended further, with Russia launching over 200 drones overnight and conducting attacks that killed two and injured four, including a nine-month-old girl, in President Zelensky's hometown of Kryvyi Rih.
  • Russia test-fired its new nuclear-armed Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile, which President Putin hailed as the “world’s most powerful” and announced would enter combat service by the end of the year.
  • A Scottish military instructor, Ross David Cutmore, was jailed for eight-and-a-half years in Ukraine after admitting to spying for Russia and transmitting information about the Ukrainian military for payment.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Kyiv is working with 13 European countries and NATO representatives to develop anti-ballistic missile capabilities, while his former chief of staff was charged with corruption and money laundering.
