Donald Trump has said the UK agreement to hand over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius is a “terrible deal” and that Andy Burnham is “going to be looking at it”.
Speaking at his first meeting with the UK Prime Minister on the fringes of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, the US president said the move to transfer ownership of the British Indian Ocean Territory was “ridiculous”, describing it as “a very important piece of real estate, militarily and strategically”.
