Donald Trump has shifted his focus to ensuring that his proposed “Board of Peace” is accepted and endorsed by major Western powers. But as the mystery surrounding the intergovernmental organization grows, some leaders have already announced that they will not join. Trump was recently told that Emmanuel Macron will opt out — to which Trump suggested he would retaliate with a 200% tariff on French wine.
Trump has been on a recent onslaught against NATO allies. He has made it no secret that he fully intends to twist the arms of Denmark and the entire EU, if necessary, to get his hands on Greenland. That is where Europe’s relationship with Trump has specifically soured. There’s an upcoming meeting at Davos this Thursday, and there, with all the NATO powers, Trump wants the full constitution of the Board of Peace completed and signed by the member states.
The fine details, however, have given long-time European allies pause. Reportedly, Trump is asking for $1 billion from every member state in the board. The proposed charter also apparently names Trump as the ultimate decision-maker on the Board. According to Yahoo!, these two tidbits left NATO allies “bewildered.” Trump has now been leaking messages from European leaders practically begging him to reconsider his decision on Greenland, which would suggest he already wields ultimate decision-making power.

Furthermore, Trump has suggested that he plans to invite Russian President Vladimir Putin — as the war in Ukraine still continues. For most European leaders, the concept of sitting on a board that supposedly ensures world peace with someone they consider a war criminal is unthinkable. Ironically, even Israel has come forward to criticize the US for the board, as the longtime ally now fears that its next-door neighbor’s fate could be entrusted to Russia. The Kremlin is reportedly delighted.
Trump was recently interviewed on C-SPAN, where a reporter asked whether the reports about him inviting Putin to his Peace Board were factual. The president quickly confirmed that they were. But when confronted with news that Macron was not interested in the board, Trump turned defensive and claimed, “nobody wants him.” He even went on to threaten another off-the-cuff tariff of 200% on French wine.
Users on X were a mixture of amused and alarmed. One suggested that Trump is forming a new axis right in front of everyone’s eyes. Another joked that Americans might have just had their last decent glass of wine. One user asked a pertinent question: If Trump did not want Macron on the board, why invite him in the first place?

It’s very unlikely that there is a legal framework to currently follow through on Trump’s wine tariff. But Secretary Marco Rubio has said multiple times that we can always trust Trump to follow through on his threats. Whether he does or doesn’t, the relationship between Europe and America has hit an all-time low.
Europe now faces a dilemma — either continue acceding to all of Trump’s demands, including the laundering of Putin’s global reputation, or risk fracturing NATO.
