Trump officials will head to Pakistan for Iran peace talks without JD Vance

  • The White House has confirmed that special envoy Steve Witkoff and Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner will travel to Pakistan Saturday morning for talks with Iran.
  • Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump’s press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the administration has seen "some progress" from the Iranian side in the last couple of days, without elaborating.
  • She told Fox News that Iran reached out to ask for an in-person meeting and later said that Vice President JD Vance, who led the failed first round of talks, will not be in attendance.
  • "The president, the vice president, the secretary of state, will be waiting here in the United States for updates and the vice president, I understand, is on standby and will be willing to dispatch to Pakistan if we feel it's a necessary use of his time,” Leavitt said.
  • Pakistani sources have said Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi is expected to arrive in Islamabad on Friday night.
