Trump Leg Bulges Explained: What Chronic Venous Insufficiency Is, and Why Photos Cannot Diagnose It

Donald Trump has chronic venous insufficiency. That vein condition is not a confirmed explanation for the bulges viewers saw on his calves this week. White House officials confirmed the diagnosis on 17 July 2025. Photos from the Club World Cup final on 13 July had shown his swollen ankles.

Chronic venous insufficiency means the valves in the legs stop closing, so blood pools around the ankles. The 1999 Edinburgh Vein Study of 1,566 under-65s found the condition in 9% of men and 7% of women. A camera cannot see a faulty vein valve. A blurred clip of Trump proves nothing about a brace.
