  • An awkward moment unfolded at the Oval Office Monday morning as President Donald Trump was thanked for “getting rid of that ridiculous red card” amid outrage over Fifa ’s decision to decision to lift Folarin Balogun’s World Cup match ban.
  • US striker Balogun's one-match ban, incurred after receiving a red card during a match against Bosnia-Herzegovina, was controversially suspended by Fifa’s disciplinary committee.
  • Trump was speaking about his new initiative, Trump Accounts for kids, when Sen. Ted Cruz took to the podium. “On behalf of all Americans, thank you for getting rid of that ridiculous red card,” Cruz said to Trump, who pointed at him and smirked.
  • "That was interesting,” Trump said in response. He later confirmed that he personally contacted Fifa president Gianni Infantino to request a review of Balogun's red card decision.
  • Fifa’s decision, based on Article 27 of its disciplinary code, allows Balogun to play, with the suspension only taking effect if he commits another similar offense within a year.
